Hair transplantation downtime (the period until swelling and scabs subside) has two phases. One is when redness, swelling, and scabs at the donor site (where hair was harvested) and recipient site (where hair was transplanted) settle down. The other is when the transplanted hair fully grows in. Even after visual recovery, the hair growth cycle continues, with hair growth beginning several months later and final evaluation typically around one year post-surgery.[1]。

What changes occur immediately after surgery?

Immediately after surgery, redness and small wounds appear at the donor and recipient sites, and swelling, pain, and itching may occur. In particular, post-operative swelling (post-operative edema) after transplantation is considered a complication to watch for, and preventive methods have been studied in research involving many facilities.[2]。

When should you resume hair washing and return to work?

When you can resume hair washing and exercise depends on the harvesting method used and the condition of the recipient site. A period of washing without rubbing the transplanted area using the prescribed method is necessary. The timing for returning to work should take into account not only pain, but also whether shaved areas, redness, and scabs are visible to others.[3]。

The phase when hair temporarily sheds is not a failure

Most of the transplanted hairs enter a resting phase (telogen, a period when hair growth temporarily stops) two to four weeks after surgery and fall out temporarily.[1]This process is called shock loss (temporary hair shedding caused by surgical trauma), and does not necessarily mean the hair follicles have been lost. New hair then begins to grow from the hair roots.[4]。

Progress from hair growth to completion

New hair begins to appear around two to four months after the procedure, and changes become more noticeable around six months[1]Since each hair's growth cycle is staggered, there will be uneven hair density during the interim period.
