VASER liposuction is a method that uses ultrasonic energy to soften fat before suctioning it out. Unlike regular liposuction, which mechanically scrapes away fat through cannula movement, VASER first emulsifies (softens and liquefies) the fat before suctioning[1][2]. Its strength is that it can more easily suction areas with abundant fibrous tissue and firm fat[3]. However, it is a surgery to remove fat, not to remove Sagging (skin laxity) or to cause weight loss.
What is the principle of VASER? How does it differ from regular liposuction?
Regular liposuction (aspiration method) moves a thin tube (cannula) to mechanically scrape away and suction out fat[2]. VASER adds ultrasonic energy to this process, softening and emulsifying fat before suctioning it out[1]. Ultrasound works by generating fine bubbles (cavitation), mechanical stimulation, and converting energy into heat to loosen fat[1]. Methods using energy are said to reduce operative time, post-operative pain, and recovery burden[2].
What can it do? Which areas is it best for?
VASER liposuction excels in areas with abundant fibrous tissue and firm fat that are difficult to remove with regular suction[3]. Examples include the back and male chest enlargement (gynecomastia)[3][4]. By softening hard fat before suctioning, these areas become easier to treat. However, how much fat can be removed from which areas depends on the amount and quality of fat and the condition of the skin.
Does skin tighten? Expectations and limitations
VASER is expected to have an effect where skin shrinks (tightens) after fat removal. There are reports that ultrasound methods provide greater skin tightening than regular suction[5]. However, skin tightening with VASER alone has limitations, and there are reports of attempts to combine other thermal energy devices for stronger tightening[5]. For people with strong skin Sagging (skin laxity), it is wise to understand that suction alone may not be sufficient.
What cannot it do or is not suitable for?
VASER liposuction is a surgery to remove subcutaneous fat. It is not a surgery to remove loose, stretched skin that results from major weight loss[6]. For people with strong Sagging (skin laxity) or those with significantly stretched skin, suction alone may be unsatisfying[6]. It is neither a surgery intended for weight loss itself nor for reducing visceral fat. Clarifying whether the goal is partial body contouring or improvement of Sagging (skin laxity) is the starting point.
What are the risks, such as burns or irregularities?
Since ultrasound involves handling heat, thermal damage and burns are a theoretical risk[7]. With third-generation VASER, if proper settings are maintained, heat-related complications are rare and bruising and pain are reportedly lighter than before, but not zero[7]. Textbooks note that surface irregularities from heat effects can occur in all heat-based fat liposuction methods[2]. In response to seroma (fluid accumulation), post-operative care to promote lymphatic flow may be recommended[7].
What to confirm at consultation before having the procedure
The key point is whether the fat in your area of concern is the type of firm fat that VASER excels at, and how much skin Sagging (skin laxity) you have. At your consultation, confirm the degree of tightening that can be expected, consideration of thermal risks, and how complications such as irregularities or seroma will be managed. If Sagging (skin laxity) is your main concern, consulting about options beyond suction will help you avoid unnecessary detours.
