The effect of cartilage grafts (for creating struts)

The most direct and largest cause is the physical hardness of the "cartilage graft" inserted to keep the tip high and narrow in its ideal shape. Generally, East Asian nasal cartilage tends to be smaller and softer than that of Westerners (though there are individual differences), so as-is it cannot create a high, beautiful tip. How long does the hardness of the nasal tip last? The recovery timeline

The hardness of the nasal tip does not stay that way forever. It gradually changes along with the body's healing cycle. The general recovery timeline is as follows.

  • 1 week to 1 month after surgery (acute phase):
    Swelling (edema) reaches its peak and the skin is stretched taut. The hardness of the inserted cartilage combined with the tautness from fluid brings the tip to its rock-hard peak. There is a strong sensation of tightness when smiling, and it's a period when it tends to feel unnatural.
  • 1 to 3 months after surgery (contracture phase):

    The excessively produced scar tissue is gradually absorbed, and you enter the "maturation phase" in which the collagen alignment becomes orderly and smooth. The tightness decreases, and the surface skin gradually begins to move.
  • From 6 months to 1 year after surgery and beyond (completion phase):
    The internal wound is almost completely healed, and the tissue softens and settles in. The hardness of the grafted cartilage "core" remains, but the skin and subcutaneous tissue covering it soften, so the feel to the touch comes considerably closer to natural. However, if strong fixation was performed with septal extension or the like, the up-and-down movement that makes a "pig nose" (the squishy movement) will not return to how it was.
